As prosthetics have developed, you now have an incredible number of choices in the type of system available. New devices have helped open the door to new opportunities and activities for people who were once limited by the functionality of their prosthesis.

That’s not the case today.

People with limb loss work in every conceivable job, including firefighter and the military. When selecting appropriate components for you, you will work with your prosthetist to understand your potential and select the best devices to help you achieve your goals.

Prosthetics will not transform you into a world-class athlete, but it might help you finish 5k race. Each prosthetic is developed to help you meet different activity levels.

The Otto Bock Mobility System, or MOBIS® for short, is similar to the K-Level system widely used in the U.S. It categorizes products by a person’s activity level, with a 1 representing the most limited mobility and 4 the highest level of mobility.

Characteristics of a person who meets K1 activity levels would be limited indoor walking, such as transferring from a bed to a chair, would take short, cautious steps, and would not change walking speeds.

Characteristics of a person who meets K2 activity levels include being comfortable walking outdoors but restrict walking to a constant speed. For K3 activity levels, this type of person is able to walk at varying speeds and negotiate uneven terrain and similar barriers.

A person might need a K4 level prosthesis to deal with exceptionally high strain due to athletics or similarly rugged activities.
